Wirtshauskatze – The different Thai in Johannis

Perfect for: Masaman curry & people watching

I must confess, we have a weak spot for alternative places: We just love to watch a varied crowd while enjoying outrageous dishes. That’s why the Wirtshauskatze in Johanis has long been one of our favorite restaurants in town.

The chef, a true Bangkok native, converted a traditional German Pilsbar into a stylish mini restaurant. The interior doesn’t look typically Thai. The very small room is cozily decorated and filled with many books to browse while you are waiting. The style of the interior reminds me of the living room of a communication-science-student shared flat. At the bar the tattooed Johanis hipsters join the organic mums and the Thai fans from the whole town for Masaman curry and mint-lemonade.

The food makes up for the lack of Thai feeling of the location. You find everything you’ve been sorely missing since your last trip to Thailand on the menu. Panang curry, Yam Wunzen or the classic Tom Kah Gai. Fresh, aromatic and absolutely delicious! MSG and his friends are obviously banned. And the prices are completely reasonable (starts with 8 € for a curry). Of course, there are options for vegetarians and vegans. They don’t use paper napkins and even the packs for take-away are made from plastic-free compostable material.
